Ospreys have bred at Bassenthwaite since 2001 and have successfully produced chicks every year.

The re-colonisation by the birds of this part of England is managed by the Lake District Osprey Project, which is a partnership involving the Forestry Commission, the RSPB and the Lake District National Park Authority.
