The Rivers in Bohemia

Gil & Pat Hitchon

A brilliantly researched and well-written book. It captures the spirit of this great Victorian artist, whose work is still so popular today. In particular I appreciated the attention given to the spirit of the man, his humanity and generosity to fellow artists, as well as the accounts of his dealings with the Royal Scottish Academy and his friendship with Robert Louis Stevenson. The detail of his work is well-documented in the lists given of his major exhibitions and in the particularly striking illustrations. This is the first modern biography of this Cumbrian born artist and well worth the read. A beautiful book.
