On Burgh by Sands Marsh stands a lone pillar of stone to commemorate the death of one of England’s kings, Edward I. Some basic historical information is given at the Monument but there is much more. There is a long story behind how the present Monument came to be and this book gives that story. It begins with the life of Edward I, the inspiration for the Monument and goes on to examine the two benefactors who owned the land and built Monuments. The architecture and construction is described in detail and part of the book is dedicated to the modern restoration carried out in 2000 when concealed historic inscriptions were discovered.
