Nella - lost and found

by Nella Black and Eleanor Lynne Wallace

This is the life story of Nella Black a 94 year old deaf/blind lady living in Carlisle told from her personal diaries and interviews with journalist Eleanor Lynne Wallace.

When Lynne Wallace met a second cousin she hadn't seen for more than 40 years, she and Nella Black entered a dark journey of self discovery. This is a story of two women who set out as strangers from different generations, whose cultures and personalities occasionally clashed, but who are bound together by family secrets and personal history.

So much was lost in 2005. Carlisle never did have much in common with New Orleans, apart from the late legendary Mick Potts, even less with the people of Bander Ache. Just for a moment we all stood together wailing at the power of water. People, jobs, marriages, homes, friendships and photographs were lost and mourned. Some of us didn't know why we were crying but joined in anyway. It's known as community grief. A year like 2005 will often return something that was thrown away and lost a long time ago before anyone realised its value. It's usually a photograph or a friendship that never got started, everything else can be replaced.
