Winner
of the Border Television Prize for the Best Illustrated Book
In1998 Tullie House staged
an exhibition to mark the 150th anniversary of
the Citadel Station at Carlisle, with historian Denis Perriam as the guiding
hand. Most of the items, supplemented by unused material, are on show in :-
Carlisle
Citadel Station: 150 Years a Railway Centre
by Denis Perriam and David Ramshaw.
This
is an unconventional picture story book, packed with nearly 300 photographs,
drawings, diagrams and specially created images.
This kaleidoscope is rooted
in a colourful history, from the initial constructionin 1847 to Richard Branson's
promises in 1997. Apart from obvious topics such as the buildings themselves,
the County Hotel, extensions over the years, and staff, there are more unusual
features on display - royal visits, smuggling, strikes, wartime, wildlife.
There's plenty to
catch the attention of railway enthusiasts: steam trains and named locomotives,
timetables and signal boxes, staff uniforms and track plans Those who may not
be particularly grabbed by railway history will surely be intrigued by the coats
of arms of the various companies who used the station, Queen Victoria's visits,
posters and press cuttings and personalities, the station bookstalls, the Royal
Mail, humorous cartoons.
At a time when far-reaching changes
in rail transport are in the pipeline and we are being urged to travel by train,
it is salutary to be reminded of the evolution of one of the country's most
important railway centres. The compilation, with its strong emphasis on visual
interpretation, is both a celebration and a valuable record.
